Choosing the Right Fittings

Choosing your bathroom`s fittings and fixtures is an important part of the design process. These include everything from the major bathroom items like showers, bathtubs and sinks, all the way down to the minor details such as what handles to put on a cabinet or the tap design that you are after.

There is a huge range of difference in what you can choose from, and most people will define what they are looking for by four categories:

  1. Budget
  2. Functional needs
  3. Space
  4. Personal taste or style

The best way to get a good idea of the options which are available to you is to either get a bathroom designer or visit a bathroom showroom.

It is useful to go to a showroom with a few ideas already in your head, so here are a few things that you should think about before you go:

To bathe or not to bathe?

It might be that you have space for a bath or that you don't. If you are keen on having a bath in your bathroom, think about whether you want to incorporate a shower, if you want a fitted or stand-alone bath, as well as it’s size, style or if it has jacuzzi jets.

Showers and Sinks

If you are installing a bathtub, do you want a separate walk-in shower? If so, how big, what kind of shower head, and what kind of controls? As for sinks, do you want a wall-mounted, pedestal, under mount, self-rimming or other type of sink?

Deciding on Taps

Entering the world of taps, you will need to decide what kind of taps you would prefer. There are a number of options available to you – do you want separate hot and cold taps, a mixer tap, and how do you want them to be controlled – turning, switching or touchless?

Bathroom Cabinets and Storage

Another thing to think about is what you are going to use for storage in your bathroom. Do you need a lot or a little of it? Are you just planning on storing toothbrushes, shampoo and toilet paper or more supplies like towels and dirty laundry? Would you like custom wooden bathroom cabinetry to organzie your bathroom.  Once you’ve decided how much storage you want you have to decide on its design.

Of course, once that you have decided on all of this, you now need to think about extras such as towel rails, TVs, lights and the style and colour of your fixtures and fittings that you would prefer. Most people these days opt for either aquatic or light colours to suit a hygienic, bathroom theme. Other favourites include chrome or brass, giving a classic, yet clean look.

Choosing the right fixtures and fittings is essential to get the right look and functionality for your bathroom. While it might seem like an overwhelming task, it is mainly daunting through the fact that there is so much to choose from.
